Four composers met: first time it was at the »Loft« in Cologne-Ehrenfeld in November ´95, then again in April ´96 in Moscow at the »Alternativa« festival, and once again in June ´96 at the »Loft«. They wrote pieces for the multiple instrumental and vocal abilities of their quartet, performed and recorded them.

Alexei Aigui and Ivan Sokolov were born in Moscow. Dietmar Bonnen and Manfred Niehaus were born in Cologne. They still live in their cities of birth. Nevertheless, they meet often, when, for example, Alexej exhibits his paintings in Berlin, or when Ivan stops in Cologne on his way to a piano recital in Switzerland, or when Dietmar performs in Moscow with his group FLEISCH. They share common interests, such as the music of Anton Webern, John Cage and Frank Zappa. They are planning further performances in the near future, but each one has his own path: Alexej continues to work with his ensemble »4´33« in Moscow; Ivan tours Europe giving piano recitals; Dietmar performs with FLEISCH, with his choir LES SAXOSYTHES, and gives recitals with Edina Soriano and Consuelo Sañudo; Manfred plans new stage pieces for his »Pocket Opera Company« with Edina, Consuelo and Dietmar taking parts. Ivan may translate Manfred´s theatre pieces into Russian, and Alexej would do the stage design. Let´s see what happens.

The four of them met a singer and vargan (Jews´-harp) player, Alexander Danilov, a member of the POKROVSKY Ensemble, at a concert where they performed with four members of the POKROVSKY Ensemble. The CD »Not only for...« is in memory of Dmitry Pokrovsky, who was still able to hear the Moscow concert in April ´96. He died the same year June 29, 1996.

Behind the sober title lurks a music of great subtlety and character, an authority about the playing that is immediately striking, and an impressive clarity and decisiveness in the way moods unfold and resolve. Keyboardist Dietmar Bonnen is also a choirmaster, and samples of his choir, LES SAXOSYTHES, are expertly deployed in two pieces; on "Orpheus In The Underwear", a 'serious' work despite its title, a dark cloud of voices ominously passes over the fragmentary lyricism of Ivan Sokolov's piano. Elsewhere, avant garde chamber aesthetics imaginatively fuse with Improv and Ambient synth; there's even a guest appearance by virtuoso Jew's harpist Alexander Danilov. Cover versions of pieces by Zappa and THE DOORS add the final lustre to a memorable collection »Watermelon In Easterhay« is given a melancholy adagio reading with synthesizer pitchbend becoming increasingly frantic, while the treatment of »Riders On The Storm« is exceptional: the desolate beauty of the original heightened by a stunning economy of means. It's the most arresting cover of a classic rock song since DEVO's »(I Can't Get Me No) Satisfaction«.

The Wire 1/98

Jazz Live

Currently the pace of musical evolution around the world has quickened enormously as improvements have been made in transportation and communication. An increasing number of musicians have gained a working knowledge of more and more genres and are blending them in many different ways. This, I think, has brought about a golden age during which forms are being created out of syntheses the way jazz was initiated about a century ago.
Western classical music is certainly part of the international mix, so it's interesting to see contemporary classical composers get involved in genre blending. Two members of this quartet are from Cologne, two from Moscow. From time to time they get together to make music. Two, Dietmar Bonnen and Ivan Sokolov, are keyboardists. Alexei Aigui plays violin and Manfred Niehaus viola. They double on other instruments, bring in guest artists and use sampling, enabling them to choose from a more varied timbral palette.
The primary influences on this music are 20th century composers such as Anton von Webern and John Cage, but non-classical elements can be heard as well. The quartet employs compositions by the DOORS and Frank Zappa, and uses instruments not usually heard in classical settings, like the Jew's harp and thunder sheet. And there's some improvisation going on.
I dig what's happening here but kind of doubt that Dixieland, swing and bop fans who are narrowly focused will have much use for this CD. Like it or not, though, the mixing of forms will continue all over the globe. Supporters of traditional genres of all kinds may feel embattled in the coming decades as young people get more involved in the synthesizing process.

Bad Alchemy

Ivan und Karlheinz mit Natalia Pschenitschnikova, Marina Tschaplygina und Anton Batagov

The RUSSIAN-GERMAN COMPOSERS QUARTET came about in 1995 with the merger of four likeminded musicians from Cologne (Dietmar Bonnen, synth, p, bells, accordion, vcl; and Manfred Niehaus, vla, vcl, thundersheet) and Moscow (Alexei Aigui, vln, bells, vcl; and Ivan Sokolov, p, prepared p, vcl). The result, »NOT ONLY FOR... « is a curious mixture of modern chamber music, free improvisational impulses with the occasional left field rock curve thrown in. The instrumentation with two keyboard players and two string players makes for an interesting mix but sometimes it undermines them. Bonnen's choral samples on »Orpheus In The Underwear« seems awkward and clumsy. Quite why they would cover the DOORS song »Riders On The Storm«, a song with some of the worst rhyming couplets in the English language (»there's a killer on the road/ his brain is squirming like a toad«) is a mystery. But there are some compelling moments as well. The conclusion of »Tayni Pismena« with ghostly string harmonics, hissing synth and tinkling piano is haunting. The guest shamanistic vocals and jew harp of Alexander Danilov on »The Magic Vargan« (they do have witty titles) is effective. It's a diverse program with some definite high points but it lacks a unifying coherence.

Cadence 5/98
