"Ich habe die Musik von Zappa 1974 zum ersten Mal gehört (')."
"... nachdem ich mir daraufhin seine bis zu diesem Zeitpunkt erschienenen
Platten anhörte, war ich verblüfft über die Gegensätzlichkeit der verwendeten
Stile, die von ihm zum Teil schroff nebeneinandergestellt werden. Es ist klar,
daß musikalischer Humor in seinen Stücken eine große Rolle spielt (Does
Humor Belong In Music?), trotzdem ist es sicherlich falsch, seine Collagentechnik
und seine Stilvielfalt darauf reduzieren zu wollen, sie seien nur Mittel, seine
ironischen Texte zu unterstreichen. Vielmehr sind sie Ausdruck parallel existierender
Interessen und Vorlieben."

von Charles Ives. Schon bei seinen ersten Aufnahmen finden sich sowohl Kammermusik

"I heard Zappa´s music for the first time in 1974 (')."
"... after then listening to his records up to 1974, I was astounded by
the contrast of styles, which he at times sharply juxtaposes. It is clear that
musical wit plays a large role in his pieces (Does Humor Belong In Music?),
but it would be wrong to reduce his collage technique and his stylistic variety
by limiting them to the function of underlining his ironic texts. They are rather
an expression of coexistent interests and preferences."
"... Thus he belongs in the typically American tradition, directly following
Charles Ives. Beginning with his early recordings, there is chamber music as
well as R'n'B pieces."
